kids' bento boxes.

thanks to jen for directing me to this link to these adorable bento box photos. bento boxes are japanese lunch boxes. sure beats our common, hollywood blockbuster cross-promoting, sodium- and fat-laden lunchables.
i'd love to know the ingredients if anyone can translate.

I can read most of the ingredients in my limited Japanese reading knowledge... The ribbon in the cat's ear is ham. The eyes are nori (seaweed). I think it says that the little red things under the cat are vienna (like the vienna sausages). Under that is fruit. The noodles in the middle are spaghetti. I am not sure what the characters say that point to the items in the little paper container. The item above it is a croquette. I am also not sure what the mouth of the cat is or what the cat's head is. I can read the katakana characters but it doesn't sounds like any english word I know. (Usually katakana characters are used for the spelling of foreign words). Hope my little translation helps!

The face looks like cheddar cheese. The sort of sandwich slices you take for making cheese toast. I think in the paper container is something like salad? Sour salad, like from cabbage? The green stripes is green chili.

The mouth is made from the pickled stem of the shiso plant.
[SHEE-soh]
Aromatic green, jagged-edged leaf from the perilla (or beefsteak) plant, which is part of the mint and basil family. The versatile green shiso is used in salads, SUSHI and SASHIMI, cooked dishes like TEMPURA and as a garnish. Green shiso is available fresh from summer to fall in Asian markets. It's also called perilla and Japanese basil. The less common and less aromatic red shiso is from a different plant species and is more likely to be found pickled than fresh.
