help.

lifejacket

these are some recent conundrums facing me almost everyday.

  1. can one of you typepad experts just design my about page for me? or help me create one template that i can use over and over again with my monthly redesign? or how about getting everything lowercased, including archives and comments? i am getting frustrated.
  2. i can't stop crying when i cut onions. i have tried:

    • wearing sunglasses (stop smirking).
    • lighting a match/candle.
    • opening the windows.
    • breathing out of my mouth only.

    any other suggestions?
  3. who the f&^% is ashlee simpson and why the hell has she invaded my gossip columns and my precious "in touch" magazines? (earth to simpson family: nepotism is dead.)

i never cry when i slice onions as long as i wear contact lenses. i almost always wear these but last week i sliced an onion wearing my glasses.. it was torture. i had to stop at one point b/c i could barely open my eyes and see what i was cutting.

if not contacts, goggles? :)

My aunt suggested not to cut the root of the onion until the very end. Or I get my husband to cut onions.

I find if I am to use a candle, it has to be a strong scent and it has to have burned for a while before cutting.

Also ground or whole coffee beans help to neutralize the intensity.

btw, no response from getty yet.

they say cut the onions under running water. my husband cooks a lot though so problem solved!

what exactly do you mean with "lowercased"? You want all typo only lowercase? Where is your CSS sitting in typepad? You can control everything through CSS....want to write me an email? :)

I usually can't be anywhere near onions when they're being cut...it kills my eyes for hours if I'm even in the room. If I have to cut them myself, I'll put it in the frezzer for about 20 minutes first, then cut it very quickly, rinse everything and run out of the room for a while. I don't cut onions very often.

I hate cutting onions too.....but if you keep your mouth closed the whole time while your cutting an onion you won't cry but you have to remember to keep your mouth closed...i forget all the time then i start crying......also if you keep your onions in the refrigerator for a while then you won't cry when you cut them either...

run hot water full blast into your sink and cut your onions right next to sink. the onion molecules(?) will be drawn to the running water instead of your eyeballs. really. it works for even the stinkiest, harshest onions. if you remember to plug the sink and put some dishwashing liquid in the sink you can do your dishes right after too.

I find that the running water helpsme as well. I'm not sure why. Then I rinse the knife that I used right away as well.

Refrigerate the onion first for a couple of hours. Then cut. You shouldn't cry then!

Place your cutting board in the middle of your stove when you cut, and keep two burners on one side on high, don't burn yourself. The "juice" the onion is a type of sulfuric acid gas, the burners draw it to them by convection, burn it, then release it. It also helps to have the range hood on low when doing it. Also use a sharp knife, and don't saw on it! As a short order cook, I've cut many onions, and used every other "remedy" from the other posts, and they didn't work for me, but the stove burners always did.

thanks all for the tips. i'm going through them one by one. first, up was michael's tip and it worked! it was a bit awkward cutting the onions on the stove, but by george! no tears. hooray!
