handmade holiday.
i wanted to make as many gifts as i could this year, or have them made by artists i "know" (through the miracle of the internet, that is). it felt really good to give handmade gifts and all were well-received (i think genuinely). if i do this again, i will definitely be starting in september or october and will work on just one or two projects, instead of thinking "hey! that's a good idea for a gift!" at the last minute and adding that to my "cadre." it was much more work than i had anticipated. though i'm trying to be a reformed pessimist, i always underestimate how long something is going to take me. i am of the genus "craftest optimisto."
here is what i made to give*:
- scented sugars. two variations: one with organic ginger and one with organic fig. included a waffle recipe.
- organic roasted tomatoes with olive oil and basil.
- preserved lemon. include this recipe (can't wait to try it; need to buy the whole book i think). didn't realize that these need to steep for about 30 days. duly noted on the tag. whoops.
- brownies from bittman's book.
- those organic pumpkin oatmeal cookies.
- organic, vegan pet treats (for dogs and cats!).
- body scrubs.
- notecards.
- gift tags for wrapping.
here is what was made by wonderful artists:
- the kimono!
- hand-knit scarfs. made-to-order and already well-loved! i am kicking myself for not taking a picture before i gave them! argh.
- colouring book. so beautiful, i almost didn't want to give them out to the kids. ("don't color that! it's a piece of art!")
- soy candles. there are a number of excellent reasons to "go soy" with your candles and this is a great source for them. my friend who is rather sensitive to scents said that these do not bother her in the least! good stuff.
hope all of you had a good holiday! can't wait to see what you were given.
ps wish the photos were better, but no new camera was to be had this holiday. :(
*i am planning on selling some items in my new shop when it opens, so i'll keep you posted!

I admire all of the work you put in. I procrastinate so long, I barely got my purchased gifts taken care of!
The soy candles sound great. I am super-sensitive to scents myself, but love candles.

Cute gifts! I may have to order one of those coloring books for my flower girl to keep her entertained during the wedding! :)
