a glossary of words that shouldn't be.

certain words and phrases send chills down my spine. why, oh why, are they part of the everyday vernacular?

to wit:

  • blessed. i've talked about this word before, i know, but it continues to top my list. generally speaking, the only time i want to hear this word uttered is if i'm speaking with the pope and he has suddenly blessed contraception, women's rights and gay marriage.
  • over the moon. oft seen in my now-forsaken celebrity literature when reporting on some celeb that's breeding/engaged/married. for example: tori spelling is over the moon now that she has dumped her old husband in favor of that old dude whatever his name is.
  • towards. with an "s." there is no "s" in toward! (though some dictionaries say it's coolio, i'm sticking with my journalism prof from college and just saying "no.")
  • rock: v. as in "to wear well:" she's rocking that jacket. please just don't. unless your name is missy elliott. then you can say whatever you like.
  • bling. that's all i have to say about that.
  • crazy busy. something about that expression just annoys me to no end.

oh, I completely agree with you on blessed! And 'towards' and 'rock' like your example.

'Wicked' used as an adverb drives me nuts, such as "Those sandwiches were wicked good!" My sister is now living in Rhode Island and managed to pick that up very quickly.

I like the word 'rock.' I shall now start using it all the time, only because worse than anything--you just said COOLIO.

How about "anyways"?

Haha. I was about to ask what "coolio" means.

add to that overextensive use of "serendipity" in otherwise plain vocabulary, leaving or inserting an -e to verbs when conjugating (makeing, scratcheing, chooseing), the inability to differ between "its" and "it's"....and the bad news is - it is everyday vernacular. hurts.
oh, and "firstly", "secondly"...there is nothing like that.

'at the end of the day' arghhh.....
I lose complete respect for anyone the moment they utter that phrase

Oh, don't get me STARTED! I hate the misuse of "entitled." Most of the time it should actually be "titled!"

And I hate "towards," too! And it's not "irregardless," it's REGARDLESS! Ya can't cancel "regard" out twice! And the constant use of "loose" instead of "lose." I HATE IT! Phew...I feel much better...
