there are benefits to my dvr besides killing an inordinate amount of brain cells. today, i discovered an easy decorating tip from the interior designer thom filicia of "dress my nest," or should i say formerly-known-on "queer eye for the straight guy" guy. here it is. get ready. sit down.

throw away all of your books' dust jackets.

the spines are much more lovely than the "promotional wrapping." i went through my entire library and tossed all of them. my shelves are much prettier now and my recycle bin is full.

anyone out there of a certain age may recall sniglets, words that should be in the dictionary but aren't, which were made famous on the hbo show "not necessarily the news." well, they've resurfaced. a few faves:

• ignisecond (ig ni sek und) - n. the overlapping moment of time when the hand is locking the car door even as the brain is saying "my keys are in there!"
• frust (frust) - n. the small line of debris that refuses to be swept onto the dust pan and keeps backing a person across the room until he finally decides to give up and sweep it under the rug.
• pupkus (pup kus) - n. the moist residue left on a window after a dog presses its nose to it.
