i heart royal mail: harry potter stamps.
i believe i've mentioned i'm an amateur philatelist and also a complete harry potter nerd. therefore, it is with a special kind of glee that i opened my royal mail catalog today to discover their harry potter collection. i am especially fond of the generic smilers sheet (£7.75) with heat sensitive ink that reveals spells like "reparo" when touched. placing order today via owl.

a game for those who love typography.
is this:
a. andale mono?
b. zapf calligraphic 801 bold bt?
c. comic sans ms?
d. diavalo medium regular?
test your level of devotion to all things fontalicious with "the rather difficult font game." hey, there's even an ipod/itouch version so you can play during all those scintillating meetings you'll be attending this week.

how to impersonate a chef.
1. walk into restaurant supply store.
2. do not freak out.
3. eyeball awesome orange knife roll.
4. don't be embarrassed when the rep reminds you to buy edge-guards, too.
5. purchase and exit store without letting the buy knock the cool outta yer walk.

go on a (green) picnic.
spring is in force here in los angeles, which got me to thinking about heading outdoors. i came across this earth-friendly picnic set that would be a welcome addition in all of my efforts to get out and enjoy a heavy dose of r+r. the bag is made of sustainable jute and plates, cups, glasses,
cutlery and napkins are reusable if gently washed. they are also fully biodegradable/compostable when their lifecycle ends.
picnic set for four: £16.99

prom dresses can be worn again.
while i'm still proud of most of my formal dresses i wore in high school (one was my grandmother's reworked wedding gown, slinky soft 1920s and just barely golden in hue), when i finally got all most of my stuff out of my mom's house recently, i came across one of my rather ghastly prom dresses. think "strapless with feathers from contempo." at the time, it went well with my hot pink long nails and matching lips, but now, well, let's just say i didn't hold onto it for posterity.
too bad donatemydress.org wasn't around back then. this national organization accepts prom and special occasion dresses that are offered to girls who need a dress, but can't afford one. this site is part of the hearst network, so i'm hoping that it really takes off since they have so many resources.
my advice is to save the photos (to laugh at hysterically later) and donate the dress.

how to stop dog fighting.
as a lover of all things dog, i am supporting sb 1775, a bill that takes will allow the government to seize property from convicted dog fighters. the funds would then be directed to law enforcement agencies and animal welfare organizations that rehab the canine victims. take a moment and write to the members of the california senate public safety committee who will be voting on this bill soon. the aspca has made it super simple with their online form which can be accessed at the action alert center. just select "california" under "find your state."

put your browser to work.
i am a new user of hyperwords in firefox and i highly recommend giving it a whirl. with the right-click of a button, you can search not only google, but images, social networking sites, a map, even weather. or how about defining a word or finding a synonym? users can even find shops that sell a particular item, from amazon to craigslist or blog about the item (where's typepad though?). it can be a little clunky at times, but for the most part, i'm digging it.
